“Passage” Receives Suggested Artist Placement in Song of the Year Contest

My orchestra piece, “Passage,” from my album “Speechless” received the Suggested Artist placement in the Song of the Year Contest. You can read more at http://songwriters.songoftheyear.com/songwriting-contest/marylemanski.html

When Song of the Year get the scores from the judges, they total the scores and use that information to determine the winners and finalists in the contest. At times the Song of the Year ‘staff’ takes special notice of an entry that stands out to us and that they personally like even though it did not place as a winner or finalist (per the judges’ scores). If that same material also ended up being at least in the top 5% of the judges’ scores they then give it the ‘Suggested Artist’ placement.

ARTISTS PERFORMING:

JILL DAWSON

The music of singer/songstress Jill Dawson has been described as a “remarkable blend of folk and pop.” More recently, her songs are also flavored with sprinkles of jazz and blues, reflecting her Chicago roots. Jill has been featured on WGN radio, in Seventeen Magazine, and endorsed by Dove’s Self Esteem Fund’s Global Ambassador for empowering women and girls through music. In 2009, her song “When I Dream” was launched as the theme for the children’s apparel company Pigtail Pals. In 2010, her song “Never Home” (co-written with Greg Steele) was recorded and released by Gaia Galvan, the winner of the Midwest Artist Search. More recently, Jill founded her nonprofit endeavor, the Melody for Change Project, using music to raise awareness for organizations empowering youth. Through this effort, she composed themes for several nonprofits, including the Teen Nickelodeon Halo Award winner, “We Stop Hate” (as seen on OWN and MTV). Tracks from both of Jill’s previously released CDs (First Time Around, Acoustically Yours) received national and international airplay, and are available on iTunes. Currently, Jill is recording her third full-length CD with Redfish Recordings. Website: www.jilldawson.com

TEMPLE SCHULTZ

Temple writes contemporary pop-rock music that journeys through transformative experiences of life and delivers those unfolding experiences succinctly through song. She explores multifaceted topics like religion (Miracle) and addiction (Lollipop Man), providing listeners with powerful, visceral experiences. Raised in a creative family environment, Temple began piano, acting and dance lessons at age 5 and classical voice lessons at age 10. At age 14, she left her hometown of South Bend, Indiana for boarding school. Her mature classical voice earned her a full scholarship to prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy. Classical singing always came effortlessly for Temple, but her passion was in contemporary performance. She further advanced her skills at the University of Miami, FL, which garners one of the top jazz programs in the country. Temple honed her performing chops on Miami’s South Beach club scene. It wasn’t until Temple moved to Chicago in 1995 that she wrote her first song, “Should I Believe,” which the Chicago Reader called a “first-rate country song.” A first place songwriting award for her song “Wanting You” won Temple a showcase at the Mint in Los Angeles. Temple’s many years of formal training has granted her much success in Chicago’s professional music scene. Since moving to Chicago she has performed with bands including Umphrey’s McGee, and solo artists including Gloria Estefan. Between writing and performing, Temple teaches voice, piano and guitar at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. Website: www.songsbytemple.com

GUEST SPEAKER – DANNY KRAVITZ

TOPIC: “Professional Songwriting” – Learn the differences in writing for different genres(country, pop etc) and self writing vs. writing for publishers and other artists. Danny also will, in demonstrating songs, touch on production and quality of song demos and what that should be – and how to achieve it and/or when it’s not as important.

Danny Kravitz has been a songwriter/producer and recording artist since the mid nineties as well as a lifelong songwriter. Danny performed as a singer/songwriter after college in the mid-nineties, while also working as a commercial composer/producer and a jingle session singer. A multi-instrumentalist, he released a debut album in 2000 that also included musical contributions from many of the top session players and CSO players in Chicago. Danny continued to compose music: as an artist, for advertising as well as write and produce songs for the Nashville publisher’s market, which is most of what he does now. Danny was mentored and co-writes with top Nashville songwriter, Steve Leslie.
